Mission Of The Month

Mission of the Month

Spring Branch Presbyterian Church established the Academy in 1971 to meet the community’s need for quality childcare and preschool education. The Academy is our primary mission, providing loving, Christian childcare to the youngest members of our community.

The Academy is governed by a six member board. Currently, the board consists of Neal Dikeman, Lee Dudinsky, Carla Pace, Ashley Powell, Lauren Tacchi, and Jorida Vakiari. We are excited that Victoria Kissinger and Todd Miller will be rotating on as our newest board members in June! Check out our Academy’s new, spiffy website at www.sbpacademy.org. If you take a deep dive, you might recognize the tiny little girl in pink on the far right of the last photograph in the News and Events section. That was Laurie (Miller) Mitchell with her classmates way back in the first year of the Day School in 1970!

March Mission Updates & Opportunities

Feed My Starving Children a group of 15 SBPC volunteers went to Pines Presbyterian Church’s Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) mobile Pack event on Saturday, February 21st! During our shift, we packed enough boxes of food to provide meals for 77 hungry children for an entire year. There was a job for everyone – we had runners, packers, labelers, weighers, scoopers, and more. From the youngest to the oldest, there was something for everyone to do. If you didn’t volunteer this time, keep it in mind for next year! We all had a great time.

Blood Drives we have three blood drives scheduled for this year, and the first one is coming up this month on March 29th. Save the date and reach out to Ashley Powell for more information.  Become a hero for someone in need of lifesaving blood.

Volunteers needed for HISD Marian Park & Baker Ripley Sunrise Centers! Sunrise Centers are one-stop social service hubs where HISD students and their families can get support with everyday needs. The Centers connect families to helpful services that support child well-being and success in and out of school. They are in need of volunteers for routine pantry organization, routine storage organization, scout projects, diaper and formula donations, and routine help unloading food pallets before our food distribution. Please contact Kayla Mizwa at kayla.mizwa@houstonisd.org for time and dates.

Souperbowl of Caring We collected 146 pounds of non perishable food and canned goods for this year’s Souperbowl of Caring, and took that to the Fair Haven Food Pantry.

Scout Sunday Our Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts did a great job leading worship on February 15th. These groups have been a wonderful addition to our church and if you are interested in finding out more about these organizations, please go to our website under Children & Youth to find who to contact for each age group and troop/pack.

SBPC Hot Meals on Weekends The 4th Saturday of each month we look for individuals to deliver meals to shut-ins.  We have 2 routes, so we usually need a total of 2 pairs of volunteers each month.  Please contact Lu Taylor if you are interested in volunteering to deliver meals.
