What does crown of thorns have to do with Lent?

Posted on March 21, 2012

The “crown of thorns” signifies the pain, suffering, abuse, and the cruel manner in which Jesus was treated by soldiers, as well as the disbelief of many who did not accept him as God’s son.

Crowns full of beautiful jewels were worn by kings.  When Jesus was arrested, the soldiers mocked Jesus and called out, “Are you the king of the Jews?”  To make fun of him they placed a crown of sharp thorns on his head.

Jesus was literally tortured by the soldiers; they scorned him; and they used physical abuse toward him, hitting him about the head with clubs and sticks causing the thorns to press deeper into the scalp.

Now, we think of the crown of thorns as a powerful picture of God’s love for us.
