The Women’s Home

The Mission of the Month

July’s mission of the month is The Women’s Home.  The mission of The Women’s Home is to help women in crisis regain their self-esteem and dignity, empowering them to return to society as productive, self-sufficient individuals.  The Women’s Home, envision a world in which every woman embraces her unique value and potential for a life filled with love, dignity and purpose.

Last year we collected washcloths and towels for these women as they opened their apartment complex.  This year have plans to start art classes and book clubs and once again would like our help.

On Sunday you will find a bookshelf in front of the church office where we will be collecting well loved books: both novels and classic literature for these women to enjoy.  In particular, The Women’s Home hopes to start a book club this year and several of the residents have requested specific titles which they will need many copies:

  • Little Women (Louisa May Alcott)
  • Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Mark Twain)
  • Murder on the Orient Express (Agatha Christie)
  • The Notebook (Nicholas Sparks…maybe not a classic, but it might get there!

The program managers at The Women’s Home plan to start a library with other titles that we collect, but this gives you an idea of what their tastes might be!

What is the Women’s Home?

The Women’s Home is a multi-ethnic, non-denominational, non-profit United Way agency. Founded in Houston in 1957, The Home’s reputation has grown alongside its facilities in both size and stature.

Today, The Home’s residential buildings include a dormitory, four transitional homes, “A Room of Her Own” apartments and a non-denominational chapel, the heart and soul of the residential block. All are located with easy access to support services and transportation routes. In addition, two commercial buildings house admissions, administration, volunteer services, the Life Learning Center and the Cottage Thrift Shop.

Within the Life Learning Center, The Home’s clients participate in comprehensive clinical, vocational and chemical dependency programs. They also receive job training in the on-campus Cottage Thrift Shop and administrative offices.

Years of research, professional collaboration and evidence-based practice are enabling The Women’s Home to become a nationally recognized model of excellence in residential rehabilitation.

Want to know more?  Consider attending their open house on July 15th from 2pm-5pm.
